Mamma Mia! Robinsonville Theatre reviews
Mamma Mia was really amazing!
On May 7, 2011 at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, Mamma Mia is shown off-Broadway at McAllen Civic Center. The song and lyrics are by Benny Anderson, Bjorn Ulvaeus, and some songs with Stig Anderson. It is directed by Phyllida Lloyd. Mamma Mia is a musical play based on ABBA’s greatest hits in the 1970s and combined altogether to create a magnificent story.
Set on an eye-catching colorful Greek Island, the plot assists as a background of a wealth of ABBA songs. Donna Sheridan’s daughter, Sophie, is a twenty year old young lady who is about to be married but desperately wishes to have a traditional wedding and be given away at the isle by her father. Unfortunately, she has no idea who her father is. Out of desperation, she reads her mother’s diary and finds out that she has three possible fathers. Being so determined to meet her father, she sends the three of them wedding invitations without letting her mother know. The entire story was amazing knowing that everything is incorporated and created based on songs. The scripts are astonishing. I can relate to some of the scenes that is why I did not let any second to be wasted. I remained attentive and responsive to everything I am seeing because of the interesting sound effects, music, and story.
Among all the characters in the musical, only five of took my attention and I only disliked one character. The lady who played Tanya – Alison Ewing – was really funny. She did a really good job on portraying her role. She was an old lady who married three rich men to be able to have everything she wants, including plastic surgeries. Pepper – Ethan Le Phong – is a young man who happened to fall in love with Tanya from the moment he saw her. Even though he did not play a huge role in the musical, Ethan amazed me by making everyone in the theater laugh because of his gestures and scripts. Sam Carmichael – played by John Bisom – was really hot. He looks almost exactly like Pierce Brosnan. He was adorable, pleasant to look at and to watch despite of his age. Mary Callanan, who played Rosie, was as funny as Alison Ewing. Kaye Tuckerman, played the role of Donna, had a very amazing performance. Her voice was powerful and wonderful. She performed really well.
Regarding the set, it was jaw-dropping. They used walls made out of wood but they look like they were made out of plasters. The walls replicates the houses that are normally can be seen in the Greek Island. Amazingly, to be able to differentiate places and scenes, the walls were actually movable. There were people that were operating the walls. The lights were incredible! They used lights to make sure that the audiences have idea weather when a particular scene is happening during the day. The lights had different angels to identify whether it is night or day still. The costumes are adorable. I loved the costumes that Donna, Tanya, and Rosie wore because they were so bright and pretty. The sound effects are so flawless. There were a couple of musicians playing during the musical, which was really awesome.
The audiences were really responsive and having fun. They were laughing all the time. At the curtain call, everyone gave the actors and actresses a standing ovation. I love the entire show especially the songs. I grew up hearing my parents, uncles, and aunts singing ABBA’s songs. So during the musical, I sang with them. Also, there were scenes that made me cry because it made me reflect on what was going to me. For example, the scene where Donna was singing “Slipping through my fingers.” That scene was really a heartbreaking part. Donna was fixing her daughter’s hair so on her wedding; she will look good. That scene made me think of myself and my mom. My mom might be doing the same thing to me if ever I get marry some day. Another scene that I love was when John Carmichael (Sam) was singing S.O.S. on the act two. I do not know why, but he reminded me of my dad. My dad sings really well too and he is a good-looking man also. Overall, the musical is amazing. It is really entertaining. It has a lot of comedy and drama. If I will be given a chance to see it again, I will not think twice, I will grab that chance at once.
